OpenAI has announced the launch of its first official mobile application for ChatGPT, the AI language model tuned for conversational input. The ChatGPT app is available for free on iOS devices and features voice input, supported by OpenAI's open-source speech recognition model Whisper. The app is integrated with Whisper, enabling voice input for the ChatGPT app on iPhones.[0] History is synced across devices, so users can see their ChatGPT interactions on both the web and iOS devices.[1] The app is completely ad-free, and a version for Android is due to be released soon.[2] The ChatGPT app is free to use, but users can pay $19.99 per month for the ChatGPT Plus service, which offers faster response times and priority access to new features such as GPT-4, the more advanced version of ChatGPT.[3]

ChatGPT, which launched in November 2022, has expanded into a versatile AI assistant that can aid with a range of tasks, including idea generation, compositional help, note summarization, personalized advice on various topics, and formatting or processing of text.[4] ChatGPT uses generative artificial intelligence to answer questions and provide advice on all manner of subjects.[5] Microsoft uses ChatGPT to base its Bing Chat, though AI models still have a long way to go in terms of being a replacement for factual sources.[6] Other companies, including Google and Microsoft, have released similar AI chatbots to ChatGPT.[7]

The release of the ChatGPT app comes months after OpenAI released the AI chatbot in November 2022, which attracted more than 100 million users two months after its launch.[8] Numerous school districts across the country banned ChatGPT over concerns it could promote cheating on assignments, but New York City Public Schools reversed course on its ban Thursday.[9]

With the advancing boundaries of AI technology, the introduction of ChatGPT on mobile devices is yet another stride towards extending the accessibility of sophisticated language models to a broader audience.[10] OpenAI's dedication to broadening its presence on various platforms means that Android users will soon have the opportunity to personally encounter the strength of ChatGPT.[10]
