Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2: A Powerful Mid-Range Mobile Platform

Qualcomm has just announced the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2, the company’s latest mid-range 7 series Mobile Platform, as the successor to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. This offers an advanced 1+3+4 architecture, with the Kryo CPU promising over 50% improvement, reaching peak speeds up to 2.91 GHz, while the Adreno GPU promises 2x the performance compared to its predecessor.[0]

The new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 features a 4nm chip with a 1 prime (Cortex X2) + 3 performance + 4 efficiency cores Kryo CPU, which is the first Snapdragon 7 series processor to feature a Cortex-X CPU core. This provides a peak speed of 2.91GHz, which is a 50% improvement over the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.[1] The new chipset also supports up to 200MP cameras, with 18-bit Triple ISP for improved low-light photography by stacking 30 images into one.[2]

In addition, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 comes with the Snapdragon X62 5G Modem-RF system, offering download speeds of up to 4.4Gbps. The chip also supports 5G/4G dual SIM dual active technology, a first for the Snapdragon 7 series.[3] Furthermore, it has the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 Mobile Connectivity System for WiFi 6E support with speeds up to 3.6Gbps.[4]

To further improve gaming capabilities, the firm is integrating several Snapdragon Elite Gaming features including the Adreno Frame Motion Engine and Volumetric Rendering.[5] Auto Variable Rate Shading (VRS) provides a top-notch gaming experience by automatically altering the resolution of focus-specific on-screen content as you play.[6] It has been claimed that the AI engine has been upgraded to be twice as fast and up to 40% more energy efficient.[7] Enhancements have been made to the charging and connectivity capabilities.[7] The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 had a peak of Quick Charge 4+, while the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 SoC is capable of Quick Charge 5, which allegedly charges a battery from zero to 50% in just five minutes.[7]

This month, Redmi and realme are releasing the first devices that feature the new chip.[1] Xiaomi has begun to tantalize us with the Redmi Note 12 Turbo, their first device powered by the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2 processor. The POCO F5 is anticipated to be accessible worldwide when the Redmi Note 12 Turbo arrives later this month.[8]
