Super Mario 64 Speedrunner Achieves ‘Impossible' 1-Up After 27 Years

It's taken 27 years, but one dedicated Super Mario 64 speedrunner has managed to complete what was previously thought to be an impossible feat. YouTuber PaLiX_ recently shared footage of them obtaining the 1-Up mushroom found in the Cool, Cool Mountain slide level of the Nintendo 64 game, without throwing Mario into the abyss.[0]

The 1-Up mushroom is found on the slide but it clips out of reach, so in order to obtain it Mario needs to throw himself off of the slide and into the depths to catch the 1-Up.[0] However, the speedrunner has now found a way to get the tricky power up without dying in the process.

In order to do it, they had to wall jump for an hour and a half, after which Super Mario 64 will glitch and allow Mario to be positioned in the perfect place to grab the 1-Up and finish the race.[1] It should be pointed out, however, that since the video clip's label states it was a ‘tool-assisted speedrun,' it is still unknown if this can be accomplished without any help.[1]

The achievement has certainly amazed fellow Super Mario 64 fans, as demonstrated by the comments of the Reddit post and the video. Speedrunning is a popular activity amongst Super Mario 64 fans, with hundreds of players competing for records day after day.

One such record was recently broken by speedrunner Xoofey, who managed to complete the ‘Boil the Big Bully' mission in 16.08 seconds, just ten milliseconds faster than the previous record of 16.18 seconds, set by Japanese runner Akira in May 2013.[2] Xoofey achieved this by using the same technique as Akira, but executing it more efficiently.[3] Xoofey expressed gratitude to Akira for being an inspiration when reflecting on the success of the uploaded run.[2]
